PROFESSIONAL ORAL HYGIENE
What does oral hygiene consist of?
Correct and regular professional oral hygiene is essential for healthy teeth, as it prevents diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease. Plaque constantly forms on our teeth and, if not properly removed, is the main cause. The term oral hygiene refers to the cleaning of the oral cavity and, in a broader sense, all actions to achieve it, whether at home or at a professional level.
What does professional oral hygiene consist of?
Plaque that is not adequately removed solidifies and turns into tartar within a few hours. Normal home oral hygiene procedures cannot remove tartar, let alone clean the tooth surfaces below the gumline. Professional dental cleaning consists of the removal of tartar (scaling) with ultrasonic instruments equipped with special tips that allow the subgingival tartar to be reached. Manual instruments such as curettes and scalers are also used for root smoothing procedures.
How often should a professional oral hygiene session be carried out?
The frequency with which a professional oral hygiene session should be performed depends on two main factors: level of oral hygiene at home and the patient’s predisposition to tartar build-up. The choice of the correct interval should be made in conjunction with your hygienist who will teach you the correct hygiene techniques and guide you in maintaining a healthy mouth. As a general guideline, we recommend a professional oral hygiene session every 6 months.
